85.18549 A Review of The First American, by H.W. Brands.
This undergraduate level paper examines the book of the title's depiction of Benjamin Franklin. It observes that the book attempts to encompass the entirety of Franklin's life and, in so doing, must focus on one particular over-arching theme - that of Franklin's personal passions that led him to do everything he did. The author does fail to adequately cite/source his information and thus makes the book read more like a dry historical novel than a biographical text. But, it does achieve its goal - to present Benjamin Franklin's character as one of intense energies, creativity, and passions that, among other things, helped create America.

89.10 Autobiography of Yukichi Fukuzawa.
This paper is an autobiography of Yukichi Fukuzawa. Yukichi Fukuzawa was one of the first experts on the West in modern Japan, which evolved in the late 19th century. He was born into samurai families in feudal Japan, which knew no other system than the Bakufu military dictatorship or shogunate. Although his father died when Yukichi was still a small boy, he remembered his father's deep belief in the Confucian doctrine, which stressed honesty, serenity and avoidance of mercantilism or business cunning. That was his father's supposed ideal form of education for his children, because that was what he practiced passionately (Fukuzawa 1980).

90.69 Jonathan Edwards.
This paper is a biography of Jonathan Edwards. Early 20th-century scholars and thinkers, like Vernong Parrington, looked down on Edwards as the "Great Anachronism" of his time, still acknowledged him for his "prodigious intellect and promise." In the middle of the century, the great neo-orthodox theological H. Richard Niebuhr pointed to Edwards as a great help to the world's need to understand the calamities of World War II and in recovering its moral bearing. And Perry Miller declared that Edwards was, in fact, a true "modern" - so modern that the present age needs to catch up with him.

91.211 A Better People.
This paper is about Benjamin Franklin. Benjamin Franklin achieved many things throughout his lifetime. He was a printer, moralist, essayist, civic leader, scientist, inventor, diplomat, and philosopher. During the American Revolution, he was the most famous American. He persuaded the British to repeal the Stamp Act, he convinced the French to side with the Americans, and he also helped to write the Declaration of Independence and the American Constitution. Franklin was not absorbed in utilitarianism; he enjoyed truth and integrity, "a naive luster," independently and successfully. This is all he wanted for the people, as well. He wanted them to hold close the belief in possibility in change, in both themselves and in their society.
